Open Books Hong Kong and Bibliodiversity

In July 2024, the libraries and university presses of three universities in Hong Kong (CUHK, HKU, CityUHK) launched Open Books Hong Kong (OBHK), a pioneering open access initiative aimed at fostering knowledge sharing and bibliodiversity. In this session, staff from the three universities will share startup stories of collaborating with libraries and university presses to enhance the visibility and reach of Chinese-language monographs. So far, 36 titles have been uploaded to the OBHK website (openbookshongkong.com), attracting over 480,000 views and 190,000 visitors within 10 months. Open access is just beginning to gain traction with funding entities, and the Chinese government is promoting international cooperation in Open Science to help the Global South gain better access to advancements in science, technology, and innovation. With the upcoming Research Assessment Exercise in 2026, Hong Kong is well-positioned to help broaden the global impact of Chinese scholarship.
